One of the things I do to be more green is make my own laundry detergent. I find it is much better for my youngest sons skin as he has excema really bad, and since I make it myself I know exactly what is in it and use the most natural things I can find. I have been doing this for over a year now and the biggest problem is finding the ingredients needed. In case you are interested the recipe is as follows:
1 - Bar of Soap
1/2 - cup of Borax
1/2 - cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
I use a cheese grater to shread the soap.
Add washing soda and borax.
Mix well.
Use 1 - 2 Tablespoons per load of laundry.
Yes, that is one to two tablespoons. I've tried several different recipes including a liquid / gel detergent and the above is my favorite. It's really cheap also, it comes to about $.01 - $.02 per load. Let me know what you think if you try it or feel free to share and recipes you have for making your own laundry detergent.

I've always wanted to make my own but I'm worried about how it will come out. Can you use any powder detergent? Or does it have to be Arm & Hammer?? Also, about how many loads does this recipe last? I may have to try it once I run out of detergent.
It has to be Arm & Hammer WASHING Powder, which is the hardest ingredient to find. Super 1 is suppose to carry it but the one in New Iberia has been out for a while. If you do look for it and find it somewhere please let me know. Oh and make certain it is Washing Powder and not Baking Powder. I'm not sure how many loads it does cause if I am going to grate soap I don't do 1 bar at a time I think last time I did 6 bars and it lasted me about 4 months. Good Luck and let me know what you think.
